About Sandy ...
Sandy Milroy, an artist living in Chapel Hill, NC, works in the media of acrylic painting and collage. She produces medium to small scale works for the wall and a wide range of tabletop boxes and other decorative home accessories. Inspired by ethnic and folk art traditions and a background in art history and weaving, she considers her primary interests as an artist to be intricate re-workings of color and pattern.
Sandy was born and raised in Emporia, Kansas and received a bachelor's deree in art history from Wellesley College. She then trained in art conservation at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. After moving to North Carolina, she began weaving and studied at the Penland, Arrowmont and Haystack craft schools.
In 1974, she began a journey which took her to Zambia, where she collected crafts for the permanent collection of the Zambian government and helped establish markets for traditional craftspeople in the Luapula Province. Subsequently, she lived for two years in Aberdeen Scotland, followed by three years in the Lake District in England, where she maintained a weaving studio. She received a major award from the British Crafts Council which enabled her to have a retrospective exhibition of her work at the Carlisle Art Museum in 1980.
After returning in 1981 to Chapel Hill, NC, Sandy completed graduate studies in the textile design program at North Carolina State University and produced fine art tapestry pins for a national market. In recent years, she has concentrated on transferring her accumulated experience into painting and collage, and in establishing a private art program for children. Sandy and her daughter, Annie Price, created an art and craft venture named, "folksi."
